Classroom & BTW Sessions

Driving School FAQ's

When can I take driver's education?

You can take the 30 hour classroom instruction at 14 years and 9 months. A student must obtain a valid Instruction Permit within 13 months of completing the 30 hour state approved classroom session.

When is my deposit due?

A deposit of $15.00 is required, at the time of registration, to hold seat. If the deposit is not paid and no contact has been made, within five days from date of registration, to discuss other payment options, registration will be deleted. The classroom portion balance is due by the first day of class. The classroom phase & the behind-the-wheel phase fees need to be paid in full before the MV3001, form needed to acquire the learner's permit, can be issued.

How do I sign up for your courses?

Follow the prompts on our registration page, or request information for the school of your choice via phone or email.

When can I take the behind-the-wheel (BTW) portion of your program?

Once you have a valid Wisconsin Instruction Permit from the DMV, you are permitted to take the BTW program.

Can I take more than one behind the wheel drive time per day?

Unfortunately no.  The state will allow a maximum of one driving hour per day with a certified instructor.

When am I eligible for a permit?

You are eligible for your Instruction Permit when you meet all the following requirements:

  • 15 years of age
  • Completion of 30 hours classroom instruction AND/OR currently attending a classroom session
  • Completion of the MV3001 form
  • MV3001 forms can not be issued prior to a student attending or in the process of attending a classroom session
  • All fees must be paid in full before receiving the signed MV3001 form.

What is the MV3001 form and where do I get it?

A MV3001 form is needed to obtain your permit. It is supplied by RyO's Driving School for students enrolled and paid for in Behind-the-Wheel with us. If signed up for the Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel, the form is emailed once the student has completed the classroom, is at least 15 years old, and is paid in full.

Students need a ceritified copy of their birth certificate, social security card, and a completed MV3001 form.  If you do not have a social security card, you will need your social security number and a second form of ID.  The DMV will charge you $35 for the Instruction Permit.

I have taken the class and I have my permit. Now what?

You are ready for the Behind-the-Wheel portion of your curriculum.

All students must have one drive time within the first 60 days of receiving the Instruction Permit per state regulations.

Scheduling Behind-the-Wheel Tips -

  • Scheduling Behind-the-Wheel sessions is the student's responsibility by logging in under ACCOUNT LOGIN on www.ryosdrivingschool.com.
  • Students should login a few times a week to look for drive times. Drive times are usually added in various locations on a weekly basis.
  • Students CANNOT schedule all their Behind-the-Wheel at once. The Behind-the-Wheel schedule is not available for more than 4 weeks, typically, at a time.
  • Students should aim to schedule their drive times out over the period of time that they are required to have their permits. This time frame ranges from 6 months, at a minimum, to 1 year depending on the age the student received their permit.
  • Students should also add themselves to a wait list online for any full drive times that work for their schedules. If that drive time becomes available due to another student canceling, a notification would be sent.

How do I schedule my road test?

Visit any Wisconsin DMV office, call 1-608-264-7447, or go online to:  http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/schedule.htm .  You can schedule your test approximately 11 weeks prior to your desired test date.

When am I eligible for my license?

You can take your road test with the DMV when you have reached the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of 30 required classroom hours
  • Successful completion of 12 hours of instructed BTW (at a minimum)
  • You have held your permit for a minimum of 6 months
